This 300-Year-Old Library Chamber In Dublin Has 200,000+ Books

Posted by Wayne G. Barber

Forget the Guinness Storehouse, Phoenix Park and Saint Patrick’s Cathedral. The real attraction in Dublin is the majestic Long Room in the library of Trinity College.
Take a look at the pictures below to see just what we mean. Built between 1712 and 1732, The chamber is almost 65 meters (213ft) long and contains over 200,000 books. Why so many? Because back in 1801 the library was granted the right to claim a free copy of every book published in Britain and Ireland. As well as being the largest library in the country, it also holds The Book of Kells, which was written by monks over 1200 years ago and is now one of the most famous and valuable manuscripts in existence. The library also houses one of the few remaining copies of the 1916 Proclamation of the Irish Republic.
So next time you’re in Dublin, don’t head for the bars. Head for the library.

Jom Harrison 78

 Posted by Wayne G. Barber

Jim Harrison, 78; authored ‘Legends of the Fall’

NEW YORK — Jim Harrison, the fiction writer, poet, outdoorsman, and reveler who wrote with gruff affection for the country’s landscape and rural life and enjoyed mainstream success in middle age with his historical saga ‘‘Legends of the Fall,’’ died Saturday. He was 78.
Spokeswoman Deb Seager of Grove Atlantic, Mr. Harrison’s publisher, said that Mr. Harrison died at his home in Patagonia, Ariz. Seager did not know the cause of death. Mr. Harrison’s wife of more than 50 years, Linda King Harrison, died last fall.

The versatile and prolific author completed more than 30 books, most recently the novella collection ‘‘The Ancient Minstrel,’’ and was admired worldwide. Sometimes likened to Ernest Hemingway for the range and kinds of his interests, he was a hunter and fisherman who savored his time in a cabin near his Michigan hometown, a drinker and Hollywood scriptwriter who was close friends with Jack Nicholson and came to know Sean Connery, Orson Welles, and Warren Beatty, among others. He was a sportswriter and a man of extraordinary appetite who once polished off a 37-course lunch, a traveler and teller of tales, most famously ‘‘Legends of the Fall.’’

Published in 1979, ‘‘Legends of the Fall’’ was a collection of three novellas that featured the title story about Montana rancher Colonel William Ludlow and his three sons of sharply contrasting personalities and values, the narrative extending from before World War I to the mid-20th century, from San Francisco to Singapore.
‘‘Late in October 1914 three brothers rode from Choteau, Montana to Calgary, Alberta to enlist in the Great War,’’ reads Harrison’s celebrated opening sentence, which author Vance Bourjaily would praise for establishing ‘‘both the voice and manner of the epic storyteller, who deals in great vistas and vast distances.’’

The book was a bestseller, and Mr. Harrison worked on the script for an Oscar-nominated 1994 film of the same name starring Brad Pitt, Anthony Hopkins, and Aidan Quinn. Mr. Harrison’s screenplay credits also included ‘‘Revenge,’’ starring Kevin Costner, and the Nicholson film ‘‘Wolf.’’ But he would liken the unpredictable and nerve-racking process to being trapped in a ‘‘shuddering elevator’’ and reminded himself of his marginal status by inscribing a putdown by a Hollywood executive, ‘‘You’re just a writer,’’ on a piece of paper and taping it above his desk.
Mr. Harrison could have been a superb character actor, a bearded, burly man with a disfigured left eye and a smoker’s rasp who confided that when out in public with Nicholson he was sometimes mistaken for the actor’s bodyguard. Erudite enough to write reviews for The New York Times, he also had a strong affinity for physical labor and a history of writing stories for and about men.

Mr. Harrison had displayed numerous talents before the general public caught on to him. He was an accomplished poet and sports journalist and a fiction writer with a strong feel for open spaces and the pull and consequences of history. He set many works in the rural north of his native Michigan, including the detective novels ‘‘The Great Leader’’ and ‘‘The Big Seven,’’ and used Nebraska as the backdrop for one of his most acclaimed works, ‘‘Dalva.’’
Mr. Harrison married Linda King in 1959 and had two daughters.
The grandson of farmers, and son of an agricultural extension agent, Mr. Harrison grew up in small Michigan towns where he developed a love of books and a primal bond with the outdoors, ‘‘bone- and marrow-deep.’’ He would associate his childhood with simple pleasures and ongoing loss, a general longing for simpler times and the physical handicap of his blind left eye, injured at age 7 when a neighborhood girl jammed a bottle in his face.
In the 1950s and ’60s, he drifted between studies at Michigan State University and the ‘‘Beat’’ scene in Boston, where he met Jack Kerouac, and New York City, where he taught briefly before returning to rural Michigan. In 1965, he debuted as a poet with ‘‘Plain Song.’’
Life as an outdoorsman inadvertently made him a novelist. In the late 1960s, he slipped off a bank along the Manistee River in Michigan, injured his back, lapsed into a semi-coma, and for some two years was forced to wear a corset. His friend Tom McGuane suggested he try a full-length work of fiction since Mr. Harrison ‘‘could no longer do anything to avoid it.’’ (Through McGuane, he would meet Nicholson, when Mr. Harrison visited the set of ‘‘The Missouri Breaks,’’ a 1976 movie written by McGuane).

Mr. Harrison’s first novel, ‘‘Wolf: A Fake Memoir,’’ came out in 1971 and he followed two years later with a work of fiction about the ecology, ‘‘A Good Day to Die.’’ But he was devastated by the commercial failure of his novel ‘‘Farmer’’ and was so broke he recalled, he couldn’t pay his taxes and couldn’t fill out a scholarship form for his daughter because he was required to include records from the IRS.
His turnaround involved a true Hollywood twist. Mr. Harrison was visiting his in-laws’ home when he came upon the journals of his wife’s great-grandfather, a mining engineer named William Ludlow, and was inspired to write a story. The completion of what became ‘‘Legends of the Fall’’ was made possible by a $15,000 loan from Nicholson.

How to Outgrow "Write What You Know"

Posted by Wayne G. Barber

Every writer has heard it time and again, and it's not without merit: "Write what you know."

When I began freelancing, I was just out of the main stream work place, so what did I write about? Everyday Working. I wrote profiles of fellow entrepreneurs, I wrote editorials about small business life... and after a while, I really wanted to move on and write about other things. But I didn't feel qualified. Luckily, I didn't let that hold me back for too long. "Write what you know" is a very good starting point. But that's all it is. It's a place for you to go to get your feet wet, and a place to come back to when the tide gets too high. But it's not a place to stay for very long. A better piece of advice, in my opinion, is "Write what you want to know." One of the great perks of being a freelance writer is that you could possible get paid to learn about things. So... what do you want to learn about? If I had completely disregarded "Write what you know" and simply opened a page of the www.waynebarbersauthorshour.blogspot.com  at random, figuring I'd send a query to whichever market my finger happened to touch, my career would be very different today. I might have ended up writing about brain surgery, tarpon fishing, and rugby. And you know what? I would have hated it. I have no experience with any of the above topics, and there's a good reason for that: I never really wanted to have experience with them. Since I have no real passion for any of the topics, if I had to write articles about them, it would feel like work. But did you ever stop to think about the things you always wanted to know, but never found out? Or all the interesting people you wanted to meet? Or the problems you've encountered that you wanted solved?
Explore your brain for any idea and you too will be amazed at what you can write about and develop your skills to take your writing craft to a different level and really bring out your 5 year old creative juices in fun stories.

“Rhody Ram’s Rhode Island Adventure.”

Posted by Wayne G. Barber

An elementary school social worker, Smithfield’s Kerri Lanzieri, (pictured at right), has pulled from her experience to write and publish her first children’s book titled “Rhody Ram’s Rhode Island Adventure.”
Published this year by Mascot Books and illustrated by Rachel Schwarting, the book chronicles the adventures of the University of Rhode Island mascot Rhody the Ram, as he visits popular locations around the Ocean State.
The book is currently available at Amazon.com and the URI bookstore, and will be sold at Barnes and Noble in the future, she said.
On Saturday, March 26, from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m., Lanzieri will hold a book signing at the Greenville Public Library.
After her daughter’s pet rabbit died last year, Lanzieri said that she didn’t have a “good book” to help with the grief, so she and her daughter sat down and wrote one together.
That sparked a new desire to write and led to the creation of “Rhody Ram’s Rhode Island Adventure.”
Lanzieri lives in Smithfield with her husband and two daughters. She is a social worker at Old County Elementary School and William Winsor Elementary School.
A graduate of East Greenwich High School, she has a bachelor’s degree from URI and a master’s degree from Simmons College in Boston. Source: Valley Breeze

Nanci A. Smith Publishes Second Book

Posted by Wayne G. Barber

Meet Anne Dennish, author of "Waking Up: Lessons Learned Through My Adventures with Life and Breast Cancer!" Now, Anne may not sound familiar to you, but that's because she chose to use a pen name. Most of you will know her as "Nanci Smith," a journalist for the Wall Revue at Wall Stadium Speedway. She writes a weekly column called "The Need for Speed." The famous Wall Stadium is identical in size and dimensions to the last race track in operation in Rhode Island called the Lonsdale Speedway. Ray Evernham also calls his modified home the Wall Stadium. She is also a contributor to the RacingAroundJersey.com Wall Stadium News page where she brings us her special insight on the historic Jersey Shore oval.
Anne/Nanci battled her breast cancer while spending her weekends at Wall Stadium, even racing in Powder Puff the week before her chemo started. The track family had a small fundraiser for her by having pink ribbons with her name printed on them. You found them on every single race car at Wall.

People in racing often refer to those they know at the track as family. Their racing family. This couldn't be more true for Anne/Nanci. Wall Stadium Speedway allowed her to escape the reality of her battle with cancer for a few hours each week while still being surrounded by people who cared about her.

She even met her current boyfriend, Robert Contreras, at the track. Rob was a crewman on the Ronnie Mullen Factory Stock, which sort of made Nanci a team member as well. She soon found herself involved with the team on many levels from sponsorship, to social media, and more.

Many of her experiences at Wall have made their way into her new book, but it is probably best if we just let her tell you what it is about. Below you will find the book bio provided by Anne/Nanci.
"Waking Up" is an up-close and personal look at one woman's journey throughout life and breast cancer. She shares intimate stories of divorce, relationships, children, addiction and more, as well as the private journal of her battle with breast cancer.
This is a book that has something for everyone in it. The author shares personal short stories and quotes of her experiences in handling the good times and the bad. "Waking Up" will tell you how this one woman learned to handle them all with grace, dignity, love and a lot of laughter.
Anne/Nanci will be having her first book signing this Saturday at BookTowne in Manasquan from 1pm to 3pm. We are hoping you will take advantage of this opportunity to meet this special woman who is a part of our racing family.

If you cannot attend the book signing, but would like to purchase a copy, it is available at Barnes and Noble.com, Amazon.com, and in both the NOOK, and Kindle formats.

We also suggest you take a minute to visit the Anne Dennish website where Nanci features updated blog posts, and pictures, of her journey through life.

DINOSAUR RACING: What's the story?

Posted by Wayne G. Barber

Author Tom Ring will discuss this book and others on the Authors Hour 9:05am Tuesday March 22nd

Tony Stella is bored stiff. He lives in the Golden Acres Residential Community, an "old-folks" home he calls "the waiting room to heaven." He hates it. He longs for some excitement, and he knows where he'll find it; Spring Valley Speedbowl, where he was a multi-time champion as a racecar builder and driver.
He decides he'll build a new car - a new car built the same old way as the late models he drove to his championships. But Tony knows he's too old to drive, so he signs Dale Hammond, a high school kid who's just won rookie-of-the-year honors in the track's late model division - before losing the high-buck, ultra-modern late model ride that took him to the title.
Can the young gun and the old warrior team up so that Dale can avenge being dumped and Tony can avoid making bingo the most exciting thing he does all day? Can the two find a common ground between the past and the future? And what's Santa got to do with it?

Believe in Forever, Signs Of Love From Departed Loved Ones. By Mary Catherine Volk

Posted by Wayne G. Barber

Mary will be our guest author on the Authors Hour Tuesday March 22, 2016 at 9:35am

Have you ever wondered if you felt the presence of your loved one after death?
Our loved one DO come to comfort us and let us know they made it home safely. Believe In Forever will show you how to recognize these signs of love. Love is too strong an emotion and bond to end with the death of the physical body. The lines of communication are still open to ask for guidance, to send or receive love. It is not too late; they love you and can still hear you. Tell them you love them and then wait for the acknowledgement

Booklovers Gourmet Book Signing

Posted by Wayne G. Barber
Meet Sharon Yang, author of Bait and Switch, a noir-style mystery/romance on Saturday, March 19th from 2-4 PM
Sharon Yang
About the author: Sharon Yang, a huge fan of films and books created during the 1930s-50s, with their blend of sharp wit, humor, and dark suspense, also has a day job as teacher in the English Department at Worcester State University. Her favorite courses, some of which she developed, are:  Romantic and Victorian Gothic; Shakespeare; Witchcraft in Medieval and Renaissance Literature; Screen and Page: Film and Literature; Shakespeare and Film; and Pastoral Literature of the 16th and 17th Century.
About the book: Set in wartime New York, Bait and Switch evokes the noir style of ’30s, ’40s, and ’50s mystery novels and films, with a leavening of humor and heart that keeps it from lapsing into noir bleakness. When the novel opens, Jessica Minton, an up-and-coming young stage actress, is pondering the mixed blessings of rehearsals for a play that just doesn’t seem to be jelling, the attentions of a reliable beau she isn’t quite sure she wants to marry, and playing referee for her sister and brother-in-law’s tempestuous marriage. Just when she thinks her life couldn’t get any crazier, she becomes entangled with deceit, espionage, and murder when an unsettlingly attractive stranger makes her the unwilling custodian of a mysterious package in a Manhattan stalked by fifth columnists. Those who claim to be her allies may or may not be on the level, as Jessica is shot at, nearly stabbed in the midst of a performance, and held at gun point by a Nazi double agent. As if dodging homicide were not enough, Jessica finds herself romantically torn between her boyfriend and the elusive owner of the package – either of whom could be an Axis spy. With the help of her madcap sister Liz, Jessica is challenged to puzzle out whom to trust, with not just her country but her own life depending on her astuteness.

The Ferry Home by Debbie Kaiman Tillinghast

Posted by Wayne G. Barber

I started reading the book and I was transported to the Island and the era. I thought I was clamming along the coast with the soft breeze blowing through my hair.
So step back in time to a simpler life as you read this captivating memoir of growing up in the 1950s on the small island of Prudence along the New England coast. A story of reconnecting to long-forgotten childhood bonds and memories, Debbie Kaiman Tillinghast's "The Ferry Home" embraces joyful moments with humor and more troubling emotions with compassion. If you have ever faced emotional challenges within your family or had a sibling relationship with both squabbles and shared mischief, if you have found peace in one memorable place, or if you have ever longed for any of these, then this book is for you. Experience the rhythm of life on Prudence Island, the ebb and flow of changing tides and seasons, and the patterns and relationships that emerge. It is a place where independence is fostered, but friends are always there when needed. As Debbie's vivid accounts unfold, you will feel like you too have just stepped off the ferry and been embraced by the tiny Prudence Island community.

How to write a book review

Posted by Wayne G. Barber

Authors are always clamouring for reviews. Some readers pen them automatically after they’ve read a book and have a ready-formed opinion bursting to get out, but a huge percentage of readers don’t bother. Some are not quite sure what it’s all about. And many readers are less than confident about sharing an opinion of something they’ve read, for fear of looking silly or uninformed. So here’s a quick overview of how to go about it.

Who are book reviews for?
You might be forgiven for thinking that writing a book review is primarily to flatter the author, or thank the author for writing an enjoyable book.
Dog Reading bookBook reviews are for prospective readers; to inform those buyers who are browsing the Amazon bookstore, chatting on Goodreads or following on-line bloggers, to decide if they might enjoy the book as much as the reviewer did.

What to include:
The best single rule to remember is this: Only write about the actual book!
You can include a very brief outline of the story, but remember the book description is already right there, so consider these points:
Was the story believable, did it keep you engaged right to the last page?
Did the structure of the plot work for you?
If it’s a mystery, was there one?
The characters. Did they seem real, multi-dimensional people?
The author’s writing style. How was it for you?
Your personal enjoyment of the book and whether you would recommend it to other readers is always an overriding strength in a positive book review. Maybe there was an experience which resonated with yourself?
Comparing the book or the author to other books and authors is useful. For example: If you like Jilly Cooper you’ll love this…
It’s not necessary to be literary and serious; a lot of the time a couple of sentences will suffice. On the other hand, if you like writing essay-type reviews these can be brilliant, but  do study book-bloggers and top Amazon reviewers to see how they go about it. (Well-written reviews often attract free ARC’s copies from authors: advance review copies.)

Pat Conroy, author of 'The Great Santini,' dies at 70

Conroy died at his home Friday in Beaufort, South Carolina, surrounded by his loved ones, his publisher said. The cause of death was pancreatic cancer.
"The water is wide and he has now passed over," said his wife, novelist Cassandra King Conroy
South Carolina Gov. Nikki Haley shared her condolences.
"South Carolina lost a beloved son tonight. Pat Conroy will be missed," she said. "We can find comfort knowing his words and love for SC will live on."
One of Conroy's most notable works was his 1986 book, "The Prince of Tides." Five years later, it was adapted into a popular movie featuring Barbra Streisand and Nick Nolte, turning the author into a household name.
"The Great Santini,"
With "The Great Santini," Conroy used his tortured childhood to provide material for the book, just as he did in "The Prince of Tides."
"The Great Santini," one of 11 books he wrote, was also adapted into a film featuring Robert Duvall.
It details his disdain for his father, a decorated Marine fighter pilot nicknamed "The Great Santini." He accuses him of terrorizing his children for years with his volatile temper.
