Happy Holidays

Posted by Wayne G. Barber

My dear Wayne,

As Christmas quickly approaches, I reflect on the many gifts that I have received throughout the year. You, my dear friend, are one who I consider being extra special. I would be remiss if I didn't take a moment to let you know just how wonderful you were to me, and I continue to thank you for hosting and producing such an amazing segment on deaf dogs. Because of you and the education that you brought to your audience, I truly believe that more animals with differences are being accepted, loved, and even adopted.

Your attention to our precious pups also brought attention to our book, Hogan's Hope. As a result, I believe that we sold more copies and donated all our profits to sending packages to our deployed soldiers and funds to non-profit animal organizations. Your caring and kindness have given gifts to others that may not have been possible otherwise.

My hope is that your holidays be filled with joy, peace, and love which throughout the entire New Year.

Blessings and great appreciation always,
Connie

Writer;s Comment......

Posted by Wayne G. Barber

I was reading something today, which was an analysis of the thing that you always think you’re going to get told when you get arrested, which is, “You have the right to remain silent. Anything you say can and will be used against you in a court of law.” That’s the only sort of culturally available place in which, when you say something, you render it public and everyone owns it. It is no longer yours. It’s rare that that’s recognized. In our personal lives, when we tell someone something, we’re really annoyed if they tell someone else. And, as a writer, that’s a constant pitfall because people talk and that’s the life that’s in front of you and it may well end up in your work. That is apparently a form of, not theft exactly, but of using real life. When I write a book, I don’t feel I should decide who’s allowed to read it. It’s put out into space, and speaking is like that. That’s partly what I’m trying to do in these monologues.

Bustle's "17 Best Nonfiction Books Coming Out In September 2018"

"With This is the Way the World Ends Jeff Nesbit has delivered an enlightening - and alarming - explanation of the climate challenge as it exists today. Climate change is no far-off threat. It's impacting communities all over the world at this very moment, and we ignore the scientific reality at our own peril. The good news? As Nesbit underscores, disaster is not preordained. The global community can meet this moment ― and we must." ―Senator John Kerry
A unique view of climate change glimpsed through the world's resources that are disappearing.

The world itself won’t end, of course. Only ours will: our livelihoods, our homes, our cultures. And we’re squarely at the tipping point.
Longer droughts in the Middle East. Growing desertification in China and Africa. The monsoon season shrinking in India. Amped-up heat waves in Australia. More intense hurricanes reaching America. Water wars in the Horn of Africa. Rebellions, refugees and starving children across the globe. These are not disconnected events. These are the pieces of a larger puzzle that environmental expert Jeff Nesbit puts together
Unless we start addressing the causes of climate change and stop simply navigating its effects, we will be facing a series of unstoppable catastrophes by the time our preschoolers graduate from college. Our world is in trouble – right now. This Is the Way the World Ends tells the real stories of the substantial impacts to Earth’s systems unfolding across each continent. The bad news? Within two decades or so, our carbon budget will reach a point of no return.
But there’s good news. Like every significant challenge we’ve faced―from creating civilization in the shadow of the last ice age to the Industrial Revolution―we can get out of this box canyon by understanding the realities and changing the worn-out climate conversation to one that’s relevant to every person. Nesbit provides a clear blueprint for real-time, workable solutions we can tackle together.

Book Sales and Signing Tips

Posted by Wayne G. Barber  Photos by Wayne G. Barber

Book Sales & Signings come in many shapes and sizes. "Rock Star" (30 books )Woonsocket romance author Jeannette Winters is holding her second book signing and fan appreciation day today at Pepin Lumber and Gift Shop , Cumberland Hill Road, Woonsocket who stocks and sells a ton of her hot or mild romance books which she writes in two versions. All of our sales cannot be on Kobo, Amazon,or Barnes and Noble especially if you self publish. Winters came out of marketing at a big corporation and applies a lot of experience to her book signings. Free raffles which supply her with some new e-mail contacts and for future book arrivals to one of her 4 series of books. Winters also co-authors to help other authors develop a loyal fan base. I personally have done real well at farmers markets, huge community yard sales , art festivals, inside a church for candlelight shopping and other venues. Think outside the box and you too could rack up some nice retail sales and you always will get some good networking and leads to help you in your journey in book sales.

MOONLIGHT HELMSMAN Robert Smalls’ Amazing Escape by Richard Maule
2017 recipient of 7 national awards for Historical Fiction, African American Literature, and Best First Novel.
He was alone in dreaming it could be done, but on a moonlit night in 1862, the slave Robert Smalls stole the Confederate flagship and sailed off to freedom. Richard Maule’s novel, Moonlight Helmsman, brings to life one of the most amazing stories in our nation’s history.
Born into bondage, Smalls longs for the sailor’s life, and by the time the Civil War begins, he is assigned to pilot a Rebel ship in Charleston Harbor. Through a dramatic chain of events, Robert conspires to steal the boat, taking his friends and family along. His diverse crew includes his strong-minded wife Hannah, his preacher-turned-engineer Deke, and a fascinating madman named Spider Jefferson. Their intricate plot requires imagination, stealth, and the brazenness to defy certain death.
Taking the reader through treacherous channels, explosive mines, and enemy forts, the author leads us to a nail-biter of a climax. Faithful to the facts of history, Moonlight Helmsman is a gripping and inspiring testimony to the power of the human will. Kirkus Reviews says, “Maule skillfully renders Smalls’ life through fictional embellishment, powerfully portraying his indomitable longing for liberty… a riveting story, and a sadly neglected sliver of American history… a seamless weave of historical investigation and fictional drama starring an African-American hero."

What I am reading now...

The story of poison is the story of power. For centuries, royal families have feared the gut-roiling, vomit-inducing agony of a little something added to their food or wine by an enemy. To avoid poison, they depended on tasters, unicorn horns, and antidotes tested on condemned prisoners. Servants licked the royal family’s spoons, tried on their underpants and tested their chamber pots.
Ironically, royals terrified of poison were unknowingly poisoning themselves daily with their cosmetics, medications, and filthy living conditions. Women wore makeup made with mercury and lead. Men rubbed turds on their bald spots. Physicians prescribed mercury enemas, arsenic skin cream, drinks of lead filings, and potions of human fat and skull, fresh from the executioner. The most gorgeous palaces were little better than filthy latrines. Gazing at gorgeous portraits of centuries past, we don’t see what lies beneath the royal robes and the stench of unwashed bodies; the lice feasting on private parts; and worms nesting in the intestines.
In The Royal Art of Poison, Eleanor Herman combines her unique access to royal archives with cutting-edge forensic discoveries to tell the true story of Europe’s glittering palaces: one of medical bafflement, poisonous cosmetics, ever-present excrement, festering natural illness, and, sometimes, murder.

Co-Author Danny Davis will discus his auto-biography  MR.X,

The Life Story of Dangerous Danny Davis

This official wrestling autobiography / young adult literature is the life story of professional wrestling's most famous "bad guy" referee. Dangerous Danny Davis grew up in a poor family during the 1970s near Boston, MA. He came from a broken home that was so small that there wasn't even space enough for him to live there. Taking life to the streets, Danny did whatever he had to do to survive. Stealing, violence, and crime all led him to reform school and eventually jail. Read how Danny turned his life around by trading in his bars for his trademark black and white stripes. His climb to the top went from putting up wrestling rings, to refereeing wrestling matches, to eventually becoming a wrestler himself with the biggest promotion in the world, the WWE. His inspirational story is about doing the right thing, developing a good work ethic, and the overall importance of family in the end.
