Author Anders Morley will discuss, This Land of Snow

A passionate skier since he was a child, Anders Morley dreamed of going on a significant adventure, something bold and of his own design. And so one year in his early 30s, he decided to strap on cross-country skis to travel across Canada in the winter alone.

This Land of Snow is about that journey and a man who must come to terms with what he has left behind, as well as how he wants to continue living after his trip is over. It is an honest, thoughtful, and humorous reckoning of an adventure filled with adrenaline and exuberance, as well as mistakes and danger. Along the way listeners gain insight, both charming and fascinating, into Northern outdoor culture and modern-day wilderness living, the history of northern exploration and Nordic skiing, the right to roam movement, winter ecology, and more.

Throughout, Morley's clear, subtle, and self-deprecating voice speaks to a backwoods-genteel aesthetic that explores the dichotomy between wildness and refinement, language and personal story, journey and home.

At 9:05am   Author Joanne Leedom-Ackerman will discuss Burning Distance

When ten-year-old Elizabeth West’s father dies in a tragic plane crash over the Persian Gulf, her family uproots their life in Washington, D.C., and moves to London. Her mother marries a knighted British businessman who has two children, and Elizabeth (Lizzy) and her two sisters move in with their new family.

At age sixteen, while attending the American School of London, Lizzy meets and falls in love with Adil Hasan—but when Adil’s father, a noted arms middleman, is deported, Lizzy and Adil are separated.

Lizzy’s family has also become involved with French-German industrialist Gerald Rene Wagner. Little does she know that Adil’s family has ties to the man, as well. When a member of her family is murdered in Berlin under mysterious circumstances, questions surface about Wagner’s dealings, and Lizzy reexamines what really may have happened to her father. All the while, she endeavors to reunite with her lost love, Adil, and reclaim the connection that was ripped away.

Set in the years before and after the first Gulf War,
Burning Distance is a journey through family secrets and competing loyalties, contemporary history, and the dark world of arms trafficking.

At 9:35am Author JoAnn M. Dickinson will discuss:

John's Adventures at Yellowstone Park

Have you visited Yellowstone National Park? If not, you should add it to your "must-see" vacation wish list. After visiting the park last year, I was inspired to write a new children's book packed with everything you will see when you visit Yellowstone Nation Park. "I loved it!"

My book included the history of Yellowstone, including
Grand Prismatic Springs, The Grand Canyon of Yellowstone, hot springs, mud pots, fumaroles, and geysers including "Old Faithful" and Native American Tribes which makes it another great book for the classroom. I've also included information about the species of animals in Yellowstone Park since 1872 like grizzly and black bears, wolves, mountain lions, bison, pronghorn moose, and elk.

About the book: Come along with John and his family as they go on another camping adventure to Yellowstone Park.
Each member of John's family has a sight-seeing favorite they want to explore. John wants to become a Junior Ranger, Dad wants to visit the Grand Canyon of Yellowstone, Mom wants to learn more about the Grand Prismatic Springs, and Emma can't wait to see the volcanic mud pots that bubble, hiss, and boil.
What will happen during the family's visit? It's sure to be an unforgettable journey!

This book will teach kids about:

  • When Yellowstone was founded in 1872 by Ulysses S. Grant
  • the history of Yellowstone
  • geysers, fumaroles, mudpots, and geysers
  • grand prismatic springs
  • the Grand Canyon of Yellowstone
  • the Yellowstone Volcano
  • names of Native American Tribes
  • species of animals that live in the park
  • facts about Yellowstone
  • how to become a junior ranger at Yellowstone
  • Importance of family time

Tentatively scheduled for 9:05am, Author  Karen Michalson will discuss,

The Maenad's God

Boston 1992. Pete Morrow is a misanthropic FBI agent whose only escape from the colleagues and society he despises is through reading literary classics. When his boss sends him to warn away a drug dealer on an obscure army base, he discovers a murder and becomes obsessed with Jade McClellan, a mysterious man whose rock band just performed at the crime scene. Tough-guy Morrow has never been in love before—but Jade is almost magical, an embodiment of myth and literature who creates living fantasies that rapidly become the only thing Morrow values in his otherwise miserable life.

But there’s a problem. Morrow is investigating a mafia family that is investing in Jade’s musical career. Being open about their relationship could get both of them killed.

Morrow’s murder investigation annihilates his hard-boiled understanding of reality when he learns that Jade is an abandoned, mortal son of Dionysus, the god whose energy informs hard rock. Jade’s mafia support is being arranged by Dirty Penny Starmaker, a witch who started life in 5th century BCE Athens, where she received a divine mandate to promote brilliant musicians throughout history. Penny is in a centuries-old war with Hugh McCrae, a primeval, human-like “monster” who has currently incarnated himself as a congressional aide with an unhealthy interest in Morrow’s work. McCrae (rhymes with “decay”) carries his own divine mandate to promote cultural decline by eradicating creativity and art. At the present time, this includes Jade, his music, and Morrow’s newfound happiness.

After all, the universe must balance, no matter who gets destroyed in the process.

A seamless blend of thriller, dark satire, magical realism, forbidden LGBTQ romance, and myth, The Maenad’s God is the story of a spiritual war that’s been fought for thousands of years; the war between the ancient arts of music, poetry, and love; and the equally ancient forces of artistic envy, oppressive law, and authoritarian religion.
