It's Christmastime in the pocket-sized village of Briarcliff Manor. With yuletide spirits flying high, life seems close to perfect in this quaint suburb of Manhattan.

But not everyone feels the holiday cheer. While most go about their joyful holiday pursuits, young Charlie Riverton is restless. Compassionate by nature, he's especially mindful of the lonely and forlorn.

At the same time, he's the unofficial leader of a close-knit group of sixth-grade buddies. Together they grapple with pre-teen hijinks, newfound freedoms and an emerging, nerve-wracking interest in girls.

Meanwhile, there's a curiously gifted newcomer in town. Charlie develops a special friendship with the handsome stranger and together, they set out to craft a God-honoring Christmas gift for the whole community. Along the way, lives are changed and people begin to look at Christmas a little differently.

Come spend the holidays in Briarcliff with this feel-good, coming of age story set in small-town America in the early 1970s.

Tentatively Scheduled at 9:05 am  Author Richard Cirulli will discuss " Demitasse Divorce"

Demitasse Divorce is a deep existential and erotic love story that breaks our sense of convention and a few taboos about marriage, sexuality, and "infidelity." The setting is the majestic mid-Hudson Valley circa 1992. The story is centered on Elia and Anais, two baby boomers fast approaching middle age, as they attempt to regain their passions and sexuality lost via their failed marriages. Now freed from the responsibilities of parenthood and the obligations of marriage, both are now on a quest to replace their sexual fantasies and regrets with sexual realities. Elia is a gentleman, sophisticated architect, existentialist and spiritual moralist, who stumbles across Anais by some act of synchronicity. Anais is Elia's muse and counterpart being an agnostic, hedonist, and actress. Both find themselves drawn together in a hot and uninhibited affair as they attempt to find harmony in the analogy of their opposites. In their attempt to free themselves from the conventions and taboos of the adolescent bourgeoisie sexual mores, they eventually find themselves shackled to an inescapable mutual love they never anticipated and equally fear - it's a love they are no longer able to navigate.

About the Author: Richard Cirulli is a renaissance man living his life as an author, playwright, columnist, producer, poet, photographer, and songwriter. He has written and produced four off-Broadway plays: Via Delarosa, Roundelay, A Lonely Summit, and Thoughts for a Lost Friend. He is also the author of The Songs of Roland. Richard founded the Demitasse Players, a 501 (c) (3) charity, theatrical troupe dedicated to writing and producing plays and movies with the mission to raise funds for the treatment of mental illness, and to bring about an awareness, and understanding of mental illnesses. Tentatively Scheduled for 9:05am  Author Ham Martin will discuss his new book, "

Talk Radio"

Vivien Kindler, on impulse, gets a job hosting a local phone-in radio show. She has an unusual idea: she thinks that all her callers have worth, are interesting, and if they’ll just stay on the line and talk with her, everyone else will think so too.

The "regulars" serve up a fun tapestry woven on the sturdy warp of the coastal Maine landscape: a delivery guy who reads Vivien poems written on his route; a lady broken by the long-ago death of a child; a retired, one-legged gardener who once built Navy ships. Others remind her that she is “from away” and will never belong.

Is Vivien’s gentle radio counsel really doing anything—or is it all just talk?

In Talk Radio, Ham Martin deftly imbeds a surprising story in the live dialogue spoken over the air. Tune in to WNWT, Frost Pound, Maine. This Vivien is surely something special.

Tentatively scheduled for 9:05 am Author James Dunn will discuss Captain Benjamin Church and the King's Philip's War

This book is a story within a story. It tells the account of Captain Benjamin Church, a leader of the English Colonists during the year-long war between the Englishmen and the Wampanoag Indians from 1675-1676. He was influential in the Colonial period and helped to win the war for the English. I wanted to avoid writing a straight history piece for a number of reasons. One, is that even though this is a long-forgotten war, there are plenty of books out there that detail the events of the war. I wanted to come up with another way to tell the story. So I made it a story within a story.

The information about Church is accurate according to his book and other written accounts of the time. The only times I went outside of the historical accounts of Church is the dispute between he and the magistrates and his explanation of his actions to his wife, Alice. I expounded on what it might have been like given his independent attitude and the situation of the times. But he would have been a hero to the men of 1776, so he makes the perfect example of a fighting man to use as an example to others.

Church had to learn a different way of war, than what the English were used to. Their opponents, (the Indians) were guerrilla fighters, whereas they were used to open field fighting. In 1776, the Colonists who had learned to become Indian fighters, now had to relearn how to fight in the open field and defeat a stronger army in the field. The soldiers of the American Revolution had to be open to a new way of thinking again. The story is about opening up these people to new ways of thinking.

I hope you find this an entertaining account of this period in history.

The story-teller Joshua Temple is a fictious character. He is the conduit through which I tell account of Captain Benjamin. I try to keep a balance between his control of the storyroom/classroom and his pupils who include the men of the barracks as well as the drummer boys.

Tentatively Scheduled for 9:05 am  Author Brad Schaeffer and "The Extraordinary"

Wesley Scott is a teenage boy with autism. He lives within his own intimate realm of sensory overload, dysfunction, sometimes violence, and fear of the outside world. He describes himself as the only actor on a stage without a script. We learn through Wes’ own words that he is a deep, thoughtful young man…but no one knows it.

Wes is unable to connect with anyone other than his father, a captain in the Marine Corps. He in turn adores his extraordinary son, his “Ex-man,” as he fondly calls him. When Captain Scott ships off to fight in the Middle East, Wes is confused and senses foreboding in what it all means, although he cannot express it to his family, friends, or teachers.

With his father overseas, Wes finds himself further isolated in a world of “Ords” (his dad’s term for the ordinaries, unlike his “Ex” son) and a stranger in his own family. His mother is distant and cold, his high school brother resents the inordinate attention his autistic brother constantly steals from him, and his twenty-something sister has chosen to move away from it all to Manhattan. The burden on the family gets exponentially worse when Captain Scott returns home wounded. The family tries to cope as best they can, but when his father succumbs to PTSD, Wes must somehow make sense of all that has happened—which is difficult for a teenager under normal conditions, let alone one on the autism spectrum who’s suddenly lost the only family member who ever really bothered to know him.

The Scotts seem on the verge of unraveling and Wes finds himself in a bewildering land of family turmoil. How will Wes come to understand this tragedy? And how will the family ever come to fill the void left by a father who understood what the rest have yet to discover…that Wes is an extraordinary young man indeed. And that all of us, no matter how much the world seems to scorn our existence—or has simply forgotten our pain—have something extraordinary to offer and make that world a better place.

Extraordinary is not just the title of this book—it’s a description of the beauty within the pages.

Tentatively Scheduled for 9:05 am Author Seth David Radwell will discuss " American Schism"  live from Paris, France

Two disparate Americas have always coexisted. In this thoroughly researched, engaging and ultimately hopeful story of our nation’s divergent roots, Seth David Radwell clearly links the fascinating history of the two American Enlightenments to our raging political division. He also demonstrates that reasoned analysis and historical perspective are the only antidote to irrational political discourse.

“Did my vision of America ever exist at all, or was it but a myth?” Searching for a fresh and distinctive perspective on the recent corrosion of our civic life, Radwell’s very personal and yet broadly shared question propelled his search back to our nation’s founding for a fresh and distinctive perspective on the recent corrosion of our civic life - and led to a surprising discovery. Today’s battles reflect the fundamentally divergent visions of our country that emerged at our nation’s founding and have been vying for prominence ever since. The founding principles that shaped the United States may be rooted in the Enlightenment era. But the origin of our dual Americas is a product of two distinct Enlightenments - Radical and Moderate.

American Schism begins with a quick reintroduction to the pre-Enlightenment Middle Ages and then takes readers on an in-depth journey through the revolutionary Enlightenment period including the eventual schism that began in Europe but then found its way to American shores. Radwell shows the impact of this schism on American history from the early expansion of the U.S. through Jim Crow and The Age of Trumpism.

In an optimistic and rigorous final section, Radwell lays out an analysis of our current governmental structure and a plan to move forward, demonstrating that it is only by embracing Enlightenment principles that we can build a civilized, progressive, and tolerant society - where Americans can firmly ground their different views in rationality.

Tentatively Scheduled at 9:05 am Susan Landers M.D. will discuss, "So Many Babies"

So Many Babies describes one overworked physician-mother as she journeys through medicine and motherhood raising three children.

While practicing medicine in the NICU full time for over thirty years, Susan Landers, MD met and managed many trials raising her three children, trials typical for many working mothers, such as breastfeeding, sibling rivalry, bedwetting, dyslexia, a gifted child, ADHD, a dog bite, and an adolescent eating disorder. The challenges of a full time practice and many twenty-four-hour shifts in the high-stress NICU always complicated issues with Susan’s children, but also provided her the privilege of caring for thousands of critically ill newborn infants.

Susan always felt that her career and accomplishments in medicine were equally as rewarding as raising three children. It was the constant attempt to balance these two worlds – physician and mother - that was so daunting a task. Susan believes that most, if not all, working mothers are similarly challenged as they attempt to manage their work and being a good mother. So Many Babies describes Susan’s experiences of finding resilience and endurance throughout her career as a physician and mother. It is an entertaining and reassuring story for working mothers.

Booker Prize 2021 shortlist: 'Absorbing global stories of life and death'

 Posted by Wayne G. Barber

v

The nominees in full:

  • Anuk Arudpragasam - A Passage North. In his second novel, the Sri Lankan author explores the lasting effects of the trauma and violence of his country's civil war, and a past love affair. "We felt that he was taking on with great seriousness this question of, how can you grasp the present, while also trying to make sense of the past?" said judge Horatia Harrod.
  • Damon Galgut - The Promise. The South African writer's ninth novel follows a white family over the decades from the Apartheid era. "The ultimate question that the novel asks is, is justice - true justice - possible in this world?" Obioma said. "If it is, then what might that look like?"
  • Patricia Lockwood - No One Is Talking About This. This is the first novel by the American poet and memoirist. It follows a woman catapulted to social media fame, told using what Booker judge Rowan Williams described as the "unpromising medium of online prattle". When reality impinges on this online existence, it ends up being a story "with intense, emotional energy and truthfulness", he said.
  • Nadifa Mohamed - The Fortune Men. Mohamed was born in Somaliland and raised in Britain, and her book is set in the docks of post-war Cardiff Bay. It fictionalises the story of Mahmood Mattan, a real Somali sailor who was wrongly accused of murder. "This is a story about the past that has great significance for the present," said judging chair Maya Jasanoff.
  • Richard Powers - Bewilderment. The US author won the Pulitzer for his last novel The Overstory. Here, a widowed astrobiologist turns to experimental treatments to help his nine-year-old son with additional needs - and take him to other planets. It is "a clarion call for us all to wake up and realise what our minds might be truly capable of if we were less obedient to the status quo," judge Natascha McElhone said.
  • Maggie Shipstead - Great Circle. Another American author, Shipstead's third novel intertwines the stories of a daring post-war female pilot and a 21st century Hollywood actress who is trying to rescue her reputation by making a film about her. It "speaks to ever-present questions about freedom and constraints, particularly in women's lives", Jasanoff said.

Tentatively scheduled for 9: 05am  will be author Lenny Peters M.D.

An Asian American immigrant’s journey from poverty in India to the heights of the medical profession in America—and the faith that made his accomplishments possible.

When Lenny Peters was a boy playing marbles among the lush mangrove trees in impoverished India, he had one overriding wish: to be the best at everything he did. Born into a Christian family and part of a minority population in that part of the world, Lenny was innately aware of the hurdles he faced. Wise beyond his years, Lenny embraced a simple philosophy: hard work and prayer. He could never have imagined how far his faith and his drive for excellence would take him, nor how much good he would do along the way.

In Barefoot to Benefactor, Lenny tells the uplifting story of how the youngest son from Kerala, India, worked his way into medical school, propelled himself to London, and settled in North Carolina as an accomplished physician. Not satisfied with providing standard medical care, Lenny became a world-class researcher and founded the Bethany Medical Centers, a revolutionary network that treats anyone who walks through its doors with the best that medicine can offer.

Wonders followed Lenny as faith determined his path. He turned a community college course in personal finance into a vast real estate empire and thriving medical practice. His fascination with business led him not only to establish much-needed health and research facilities, but to establish a bank for underserved communities that now operates in four states. Through it all, he battled the prejudice he encountered as a professional man of color with a “funny accent,” turning every hardship into opportunity and learning that forgiveness and acceptance bestow grace.

Most importantly, Lenny has never forgotten his roots. The Lenny Peters Foundation shares his abundance with the less fortunate, both here and in India. His story of trailblazing in medicine, finance, and philanthropy is proof that miracles come to those who have faith—in God and in themselves.

Once upon a time ABC-TV's Moonlighting was among the most buzzed-about shows in the country, thanks largely to the bravado of creator Glenn Gordon Caron, who never met a television convention he didn't want to break, and the sizzling on-screen chemistry between glamorous erstwhile film star Cybill Shepherd and a New Jersey bartender nobody had ever heard of before named Bruce Willis, who bickered and flirted ceaselessly on screen and engaged in epic off-screen battles that all these years later remain the stuff of Hollywood legend. This combustible blend of creative brilliance produced some of the most acclaimed, audacious, and innovative programming of the eighties, including a black and white tribute to film noir, with an introduction by Orson Welles; a parody of Shakespeare's The Taming of the Shrew, written in iambic pentameter; an homage to The Honeymooners; and countless metafictive episodes breaking through the fourth wall — almost unheard of at the time for hourlong comedy-dramas. Without a doubt, Moonlighting helped pave the way for the era of prestige television we are now all enjoying. The real story of this pioneering television series and the extraordinary behind-the-scenes challenges, battles, and rewards has never been told — until now, Author Scott Ryan (The Last Days of Letterman, thirtysomething at thirty: an oral history, The Blue Rose, Scott Luck Stories) conducted over twenty interviews with the actors, writers, directors, and producers who made Moonlighting such a dynamic, unforgettable show, delving deep into their thoughts and feelings as they relive this magical moment in pop culture history in this full color oral history. Tentatively Scheduled for 9:05 am Author Bar-Giora Goldberg will discuss, "The Mind is Mightier:

You are invited to join an intellectual adventure of the mind, a broad canvas review of the cognitive evolution of our civilization in politics, science, technology and the arts.

Humanity is on a path of rising cognition and complexity, the world becomes increasingly our idea. After two horrific world wars, it seems that the great powers are rejecting the sword in favor of the pen.

Technology is giving us tools and challenging us to change and move forward. But the new and more cognitive world is also confusing, sometimes frustrating and changing very fast. Too many of us feel displaced, even lost. Better understanding is the key to regaining our footing and better adjustment in a world of constant flow.

The Mind is Mightier is about this viewpoint of history; a broad historical description of the various elements of our cognitive evolution and the great variety of life's activities: social order, art, science, music, technology, economy, religion, world order, law and self-evaluation. It demonstrates the tendency for increased complexity in all the above as we continuously chart new directions and purpose for humanity's path.

At 9:35 am  Poet Karen Warinsky will join the panel with " Gold In Autumn' and local events in Poetry.

FLIRTATION ON THE HUDSON

Cornelia Rose decides early in life, almost instinctively, not to allow anyone to limit her to the few choices available to women in New York in the 1850s. Marry well and become a proper lady—is that all I can do? She surreptitiously pursues learning 'not meant for young ladies,' and begins the journey to become a midwife.

WALK AWAY WEST

Cornelia Rose's life takes an unexpected turn with Obadiah's decision to heed the call of the West. As his wife, she has no choice but to leave her home, family, and the comforts of civilization, and join him in accepting his opportunity to become circuit judge in Utah Territory. In spite of her endless hours of research, nothing prepares Cornelia for the arduous walk toward the Wild West.

418: I Am a Teapot is a near-future dystopian science fiction novel that explores a world where people by choice, birth, or punishment, relinquish the rights to their physical body. Their brains exist in a constantly-connected virtual interface where they enjoy a fantasy world of endless indulgences. However, while their minds have fun, their bodies are controlled by implants doing the filthiest and most dangerous jobs known to humanity.

Stripped of their identities, these dredges of society are simply called staff and they are disposable. But what happens when a staff becomes cognizant of its situation and tries to break free?

When staff number 418's physical body is broken, he must come to terms with reality, and defend himself in a trial for his life. Will an unlikely friendship save him from permanent retirement?
