Tentatively Scheduled for 9:05am Author Gisele Huff will discuss   " Force of Nature "

A moving account of resilience, hope, and purpose—punctuated by unforgettable lessons from an extraordinary life.

After escaping war-torn France, where eighteen members of her family were murdered in the Holocaust, Gisèle Huff arrived in the US with her mother. It was 1947, and they had $400 to their name. Gisèle quickly found her footing in America, eventually earning a PhD at Columbia University, running for Congress, and launching a spectacular career in K–12 education. Her determination to revolutionize the school system changed the lives of countless children.

But Gisèle’s successful, happy life was interrupted by devastating loss, which eventually led her to champion universal basic income through a movement that advocates for economic security for all.

Telling a story of setbacks and triumphs, grief and joy, the chapters of Gisèle’s life speak to her strength, to her commitment to deep and lasting friendships, and to her determination to challenge and engage with the great minds of politics and education. Force of Nature is an inspiring account of a woman undaunted by formidable odds.

Tentatively scheduled for 9:05am Author Dan Flanigan will discuss, "On Lonesome Roads"

As private detective Peter O’Keefe’s continues to heal from the burns he suffered from the blast of a car bomb, neither he nor the police can prove who his assailants were. The media speculates that “The Outfit,” a mafia group in the city, is to blame. O’Keefe isn’t so sure, but he means to find out – and fast.

Terrified of another attack, O’Keefe’s ex-wife, Annie, won’t allow his eleven-year-old daughter near him except under the tightest security, including an armed guard. He can’t blame her. It isn’t safe for Kelly, or anyone else he cares about, to be near him while his attacker is on the loose.

In a desperate effort to keep his family safe and restore his life to some measure of normality, O’Keefe becomes consumed with solving the mystery of who is hunting him. Along the way, he’ll be forced to negotiate with The Outfit – a “devil’s bargain” that just might cost him everything.

Stephen King Testifies

Horror author Stephen King took the stand yesterday as a Justice Department witness in the Penguin Random House and Simon & Schuster antitrust trial, stating consolidation is bad for competition in the industry. The bestselling author, mainly published by Simon & Schuster, testified to his belief large publisher mergers lead to lower pay for authors.

The trial began Monday to block the $2.2B merger, which would combine two Big Five publishers, giving them control of nearly half of the market. The government argued the deal would negatively affect authors with fewer bidders for their work, resulting in lower author advances—especially for those who earn advances of $250K and up. The publishers argue it would allow both companies to pool their resources to make the industry more competitive, offering higher advances. The two publishers will still operate separately and can bid against each other for book deals.

The trial is expected to last up to three weeks and includes testimony (see here and here) from top book executives throughout the publishing world.
