Independent Book Store Day April 29

Posted by Wayne G. Barber

Most of all, independent bookshops depend upon individual readers like you. I was a bookseller for many years, and I learned early on how important seemingly casual conversations about books with people like you could be. You make time to visit your local bookshop, looking for a great read or to attend an event. Your conscious actions and interactions are the not-so-secret ingredient that makes any bookstore an intrinsic part of its community.
There are many things a bookstore can do to become a destination spot. None of them works without you. Please stop by your favorite indie bookshop tomorrow to enjoy the IBD festivities. It's really your day. Making connections--to books, to readers, to booksellers--is the way of the book world, where we are at once fiercely independent and necessarily interdependent. Tentatively Scheduled for 9:05 am Mary Jane Condon Bohlen will discuss Bosum Buddies

Bosom Buddies" is a coffee table book of black and white photographs and essays, celebrating the inner and outer beauty of breast cancer survivors who have found that there IS life after breast cancer. This is a book suitable for those newly diagnosed, their families and friends, and anyone interested in the thoughts and feelings of women on the journey. For over twenty years I have had the dream of creating a book of photos and essays showing the scars and reconstructions, the thoughts, fears, inner spirit, and especially the HOPES of those brave enough to bare their bodies and show their beauty. I have chosen the name "Bosom Buddies" as the title of this dream and photographed my "buddies" for over a year and a half as they kayaked, rode horses, worked in their gardens, sang, did yoga and other activities meaningful to them. The women depicted in this book  are representative of the many thousands of brave warriors who battle this dread disease called breast cancer every day. They have taken their bravery one step further by allowing themselves to be photographed in subtle and delicate settings. Find a comfortable spot, sit down, enjoy a cup of tea or coffee, and meet these amazing women, they are SURVIVORS!!!!!
