Pat Conroy, author of 'The Great Santini,' dies at 70

Conroy died at his home Friday in Beaufort, South Carolina, surrounded by his loved ones, his publisher said. The cause of death was pancreatic cancer.
"The water is wide and he has now passed over," said his wife, novelist Cassandra King Conroy
South Carolina Gov. Nikki Haley shared her condolences.
"South Carolina lost a beloved son tonight. Pat Conroy will be missed," she said. "We can find comfort knowing his words and love for SC will live on."
One of Conroy's most notable works was his 1986 book, "The Prince of Tides." Five years later, it was adapted into a popular movie featuring Barbra Streisand and Nick Nolte, turning the author into a household name.
"The Great Santini,"
With "The Great Santini," Conroy used his tortured childhood to provide material for the book, just as he did in "The Prince of Tides."
"The Great Santini," one of 11 books he wrote, was also adapted into a film featuring Robert Duvall.
It details his disdain for his father, a decorated Marine fighter pilot nicknamed "The Great Santini." He accuses him of terrorizing his children for years with his volatile temper.

Book Signing with a Local Author

Posted by Wayne G. Barber

Join us as we welcome back ProJo Sports Writer and best selling author, Bill Reynolds, for a book signing of his latest book, Hope, A School, A Team, A Dream. Bill we be at our Barrington location Saturday, March 5th, 1 - 2:30 pm, and at our Garden City location, Barrington Books Retold on Sunday, March 6th, at 1 - 2:30pm.

About the book:
Hope High School in Providence, Rhode Island was once a model city school, graduating a wide range of students from different backgrounds. But the tumult of the 1960s and the drug wars of the 70s changed both Providence and Hope. Today, the aging school is primarily Hispanic and African-American, with kids traveling for miles by bus and foot each day.

Hope was known for its state championship basketball teams in the 1960s, but its 2012 team is much different. Disobedient, distracted, and overwhelmed by family troubles, with mismatched sneakers and a penchant for profanity and anger, these boys represent Coach Dave Nyblom's dream of a championship, however unlikely that might seem. Nyblom's mostly black players, including several who emigrated to Providence from war-torn Liberia, face gang violence, domestic uncertainty, drug problems, and a host of other issues. But with the unfailing support and guidance of Nyblom and other Hope coaches, their ragtag team gradually pulls together, overcoming every obstacle to find the faith and trust in themselves that Nyblom never stops teaching.

A look at a hidden world that just a few hundred yards from Brown University, Bill Reynolds' Hope is the inspiring true story of young men and their mentors pursuing one goal—a championship—but achieving so much more.

New Release: Scared to Death: Do it Anyway

Posted by Wayne G. Barber

Now available on Amazon from Stillwater River Publications! My third book, co-authored with Motivate For Success's Brian Beneduce, tells the incredible story of how Brian overcame a lifetime of debilitating fear, anxiety and panic to reach an extraordinary level of happiness and success.
Unlike my last two books, this is NOT a novel; but I think everyone will still enjoy this fascinating story. And if you suffer from anxiety and panic attacks yourself, it's a must read -- a rare first-person account of a misunderstood affliction from inside the mind of a person who has lived it, and beat it.

Brian Beneduce has always known there was something wrong with him -- very wrong. Even at a young age when his friends were enjoying activities as harmless as sleepovers, he would hyperventilate, sweat and tremble at the mere thought. He never told a soul. As he got older his condition worsened. Open spaces, crowds, bridges, tunnels, elevators, planes and traffic all sent him into spells of debilitating fear and panic, but never more than when he would be trapped somewhere alone with his own thoughts, and would be convinced that "The Thing," as he named it, would someday kill him. Yet somehow, perhaps for the sake of his wife, children, or his business he vowed that he would find the willpower he needed to beat it -- or would die trying. Scared to Death.... Do It Anyway is one man's inspirational and tumultuous journey told through the thoughts, feelings and secrets of an acute agoraphobic. It not only chronicles three decades of severe panic and anxiety attacks, but it also reveals the healing thought process of self-realization that helped him defeat "The Thing," build a multi-million dollar business, and discover a life of true happiness.
